The love affair between cryptocurrency and world soccer has a new chapter after English soccer club, Watford FC revealed today that its players would wear shirts bearing the famous Bitcoin logo for the 2019/2020 season.
According to a press release shared by the club, the new initiative forms part of an education drive sponsored by sports betting company Sportsbet.io and hopes to increase public awareness around Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general.
In sharing the reason why Sportsbet decided to promote the Bitcoin logo as part of their ongoing sponsorship deal with Watford FC, Justin Le Brocque, Head of Marketing at the startup reportedly said,
“The crypto community have been hugely supportive of us since we began, so putting the Bitcoin logo on the sleeve felt like a fun way to give something back while also showing them our support.”
Scott Duxbury, Watford's Chairman & CEO, however, focused on the fact that accepting Sportsbet’s partnership proposal to place the Bitcoin logo on the Watford sleeve goes against the norm and opens up more opportunities for the soccer club.
“Placing the Bitcoin logo on a Premier League shirt is something that challenges the accepted norm. We’re excited about the partnerships and the potential for new global conversations that it could help start for our club.”
Meanwhile, further details regarding the new initiative show that the sponsorship is crowd-funded, allowing any other interested companies to use Bitcoin as a means to pay for the deal and subsequently receive benefits such as a “public LED space shown live during matches.”
In another report regarding crypto and soccer, we reported last week that Spain-based Atletico de Madrid partnered with crypto tokenization startup, Socios, to launch a crypto token for their fan base.
